Get a slice of the action this National Pizza Day (9th February) by visiting our favourite independent pizza places
Square

0191 933 3519
hiptoeatsquare.com
Detroit-style pizza which is served deep and square, using 48-hour proved dough and cooked in blue steel pans to create a delicious caramelised cheese crust, crispy base and fluffy centre is exactly what you’ll find at Square. Order online or visit their slice house in Newcastle to enjoy slices and full pizza pies. Our favourite is the Chicky Chiky Parm Parm – think slow-cooked red sauce topped with a three-cheese blend, house-fried chicken, whipped ricotta flowers, oreganata breadcrumbs, shaved parmesan, garlic ranch and fresh basil.
Pizza Fella

pizzafella.com
In 2014 co-owner and pizza chef Miles learnt how to make proper Neapolitan pizza with a stint at pizza school in Naples. Returning to Leeds he bought a van, fitted it with a wood-fired pizza oven and started trading delicious slices at street food markets. Now, Pizza Fella have their permanent home on Vicar Lane and continue to serve their soft, homemade wood-fired pizzas which are popular with locals. Expect toppings such as ‘nduja, balsamic onions and fior di latte mozzarella, Portobello mushrooms, rustego ham and basil, and gaeta olives, artichoke and organic tomatoes.
Stable Hearth
33–35 Duke Street, Darlington DL3 7RX
01325 730400
facebook.com/stablehearth
Serving mouth-watering pizza from the heart of Darlington, Stable Hearth has been a favourite among locals for years. The restaurant won Best Pizzeria in the UK at the Italian Awards last summer and as well as serving authentic Neapolitan pizza (no deep pan or thin and crispy pizzas here) they also have a selection of antipasti dishes including arancini, calamari and parmigiana on the menu.
Living North Loves
Cresci Pizzeria

crescipizzeria.com
One of York’s most popular independent Neapolitan pizzeria restaurants and takeaways, Cresci has been serving delicious pizzas for the last three years. Cooked in their wood-fired oven, pizzas here are loaded with toppings such as sweet napoli salami, chillies and basil, artichokes, ham, sautéed mushrooms and black olives, and (our favourite) smoked mozzarella, roast potatoes, sautéed mushrooms, pecorino cheese and basil.
Scream For Pizza
21–25 Starbeck Avenue, Sandyford NE2 1RJ
31 Quayside, Newcastle NE1 3DE
screamforpizza.com
After mastering the skills of making authentic Neapolitan pizza in Naples and returning home to convert an old ambulance to sell their delicious pizza from, duo Victoria and Alex have turned Scream for Pizza into one of the North East’s go-to pizza spots. With a restaurant in Sandyford, a slice shop on the Quayside and pizza available for takeaway, you can get your pizza fix anytime you like. Our choice? We suggest Brooklyn’s Finest – a garlic butter base topped with double pepperoni, mozzarella, baked tomato sauce, oregano and gouda.
Pizza West
West Cliff, Whitby YO21 3HT
01947 604789
pizzawest.co.uk
This restaurant on the West Cliff is a Yorkshire hidden gem and has beautiful views and airy interiors – it’s the perfect seaside location to celebrate National Pizza Day. The menu is extensive and includes everything from baked Tuscan meatballs and crab and prawn ravioli for appetisers, and for their pizza toppings, they’ve got all the classics but with a modern twist – think wild garlic mushrooms with truffle and parmesan, as well as pil pil prawns and ‘nudja and short rib, gorgonzola, potato and mozzarella pizzas.

upnorthpizzaco.co.uk
Serving delicious Neapolitan-style pizza (as well as tasty cake, Italian toasties and coffee), Up North is the perfect place to head to this National Pizza Day. Choose to dine in or take away, and enjoy classic pepperoni with a drizzle of hot honey, spicy meat feast or garlic chicken and parsley 12-inch pizzas.

Rudy’s
Leeds, Sheffield, Chapel Allerton, Headingley
rudyspizza.co.uk
With outposts across Yorkshire, Rudy’s has become a name to know in the pizza world. Hand-making and double fermenting their dough so that it’s soft, light and floppy before it goes in a wood-fired pizza oven, you’ll find these pizzas hard to beat. We recommend the Romagnola topped with parmesan, prosciutto, rocket and olive oil, or for something a little different, order the Cinghiale with topping such as wild boar, salami and ‘nduja.
