11 Bakeries to Visit this Real Bread Week
It’s Real Bread Week, and great bread has never been easier to find
BLUEBIRD BAKERY
Malton, York and Leeds
Nicky and Al Kippax’s ethos is to let the fermentation do the heavy lifting when it comes to flavour, rather than overcomplicating things. They’ve just opened a new store at Leeds market too.
BRADFORD BAKERY
Rawson Place, Bradford
As adept with a simple sourdough cob as they are with those fiddly plaited loaves which always end up coalescing into an indistinct blob when you try making them at home.
FORGE BAKEHOUSE
Abbeydale Road, Sheffield
Since 2012, Forge have done things the old way. Their White Peak sourdough is belting, and any bread they don’t sell is donated to the pigs at Heeley City Farm. Lucky pigs.
HAXBY BAKEHOUSE
Thee Village, Haxby
As well as picking up loaves from their bakery, Haxby supply bread to top local restaurants like the Rattle Owl. Try their beetroot and nigella sourdough.
ZUZU’S
York
Head Baker Tim Smith’s absolutely brand new place is drawing admiring glances already. Big flavour combos – treacle, oats, linseed, poppyseed and sourdough, for instance – are delicately handled.
ZEN BAKER
Markets regionwide
This bakers’ slow loaves – the spelt and pumpernickels are great – are made in Humshaugh but available anywhere at markets pretty much everywhere.
PINK LANE BAKERY
Pink Lane, Newcastle
Formerly Sugar Down Bakery, this close cousin of Settle Down Café’s strong on darker, maltier loaves.
OLIVIA'S ARTISAN BAKERY AND CAFE
Consicliffe Road, Darlington
Beyond your white and brown loaves, there’s esoteric stuff like the date and pecan loaf. We’ll probably leave their black pudding loaf though, thanks.
BREAD AND ROSES
Powburn, near Alnwick
This tiny little village has some big flavours wafting around it: their miche (a brown loaf, to you) made with Gilchesters organic our is brilliant. Pick some up at at the Good Life Shop in Wooler and Scotts of Alnmouth.
ROTHBURY HOME BAKERY
Coquet View, Rothbury
Find bloomers, tiger loaves, sourdough, malt loaves, seeded loaves and Dutch loaves called – hold onto yourselves, guys – donkers. Donkers. DONKERS. Amazing.
