The 39 Steps is a Great Night Out at Newcastle Theatre Royal
If you're seeking a thrilling and fun night out at the theatre, The 39 Steps promises high-energy and hilarity
John Buchan wrote the book in 1915 and the Alfred Hitchcock classic spy film based on the story was a hit in the 1930s, but the producer of this stage version argues the story still resonates today – and after seeing what unfolds we agree.
We take our seats to follow the adventures of hero Richard Hannay as he encounters murders and double-crossing in this comedy thriller (which celebrates the best of both of those genres).
While this production retains the 1930s setting and costumes, and features some of the original score from the Hitchcock film, clever twists make it an exciting watch. For the stats – four actors play 139 roles in 100 minutes – it’s a fast-paced, impressive display of acting.
Combining Buchan’s classic thriller with a hint of Hitchcock and a glorious reworking of the two, the mix by Patrick Barlow creates a comedic but compelling show brought to you by a cast of just four. Tom Byrne plays Richard Hannay, Safeena Ladha has three parts which she delivers with charisma, while Eugene McCoy and Maddie Rice play Clown 1 and 2 in brilliant style. Reflecting to some extent on today’s complex political world, this production gives on so many different levels.
But most importantly, it’s a great night out – catch it if you can!
