From fresh, homemade bread to the most decadent cakes and puddings, here are the best places to indulge this festive season.

A family-run business that’s been baking fresh produce from scratch in Teesside for more than 20 years, Bluecorn Bakery has everything you need for the festive season. From artisan bread and festive pies to quiche, cakes and more, you can be sure of the quality here. Their flagship bakery can be found in Norton, and they also have a second location on Wellington Square in Stockton where you can sit and enjoy tea and cake during a busy day of shopping.

A permanent fixture in Newcastle’s busy Ouseburn area, Northern Rye create small batch baked goods, with a speciality in sourdough breads and Viennoiserie. Using quality ingredients including organic flours, and following a slow fermentation process, their sourdough bread proves from 12 to 28 hours to ensure delicious flavours. Keep your eyes peeled for their new location coming to Harbour House in North Shields soon.

Deep North make everything from scratch, from their dough to their fillings and glazes. They have three shops where doughnuts are served fresh daily and the menu changes to make the most of seasonal ingredients, though the brown butter sea salt is a highlight.

A café-cum-bakery specialising in vegan treats (and enormous cakes made on site), the selection here is great and perfect for wowing your guests at Christmas without spending hours in the kitchen yourself. Available to sit-in, takeaway or for local delivery (as well as further afield) when contacted via social media, our current favourite is the lemon bramble, wonderfully tart and moist.

FAB Bakery have taken the North East bakery scene by storm. They offer sourdough, rye bread, ciabatta, croissants and pain au chocolat daily, but their weekend specials are the real star of the show. PureKnead’s freshly-baked sourdough takes a whole 48 hours to make, using just flour, water and salt and traditional techniques. Their range of cakes, pastries and savoury bakes are all made with pure ingredients and passion, and they offer a bespoke cake service for special occasions, too.

Gateshead’s newest bakery, Savour, have a passion for innovative, top-quality pastries. From their hazelnut crumble puff to their lemon tart, each of their desserts is utterly decadent and they also offer fresh sandwiches and salads.

Pink Lane Bakery

Beautifully laminated pastries, artisan sourdough loaves and huge cinnamon buns – Pink Lane Bakery has it all. Since opening in Newcastle city centre in 2012, they’ve opened a Jesmond sit-down café and Gosforth outpost. All of their bakes are amazing, but for us, their sausage rolls are an absolute highlight.
