The Walls

In brief: A Georgian townhouse on Berwick’s town walls with views over the River Tweed.
Our highlight: Breakfasts brimming with local produce.
Insider guide: Berwick’s cobbled streets might be a haven of tranquility now, but this was not always the case and the town once bore the brunt of invasions from the north. Nowadays, guests can sleep soundly in the Walls Room, Tweed Room or Swan Room and the latter can also be converted into a family room, should larger groups wish to make use of its adjoining Cygnet Room. In the morning they offer continental and traditional Northumbrian breakfasts alongside local delights such as Craster kippers and smoked haddock. Then, after a day out walking or wildlife spotting along Northumberland’s majestic coast, enjoying a round on one of Berwick’s picturesque golf courses, or tracing the footsteps of L. S. Lowry who frequently painted the town, take the time to warm up by the wood-burning stove in their guest lounge. Here you can make use of the ample reading material to plan for the following day, pour yourself a drink from the honesty bar, or just enjoy the views over the River Tweed.

For breakfast you can choose from a range of cooked and continental options, including a full Northumbrian breakfast, a vegetarian platter or classic Northumbrian smoked kippers, all made with an emphasis on locally-sourced produce. For an ultra-deluxe experience, they also have a detached lodge in the grounds (fear not, it’s only a short walk to breakfast) with its own private garden, kitchen and a lounge with an open fire to cosy up next to in the evening.

Our highlight: This welcoming B&B is less than 10 minutes’ walk from the golden sands of Budle Bay.

At Budle Hall you can choose a super king-sized bed in one of the four luxury bedrooms, but you can also bring the whole family and stay in the three-bedroom Budle Lodge in the grounds, or perhaps their Scandi-style self-catering lodge in Brada Quarry is more your thing?
