Little Women
Louisa May Alcott
There are very few books as dear to me as Little Women, and I’ll be the first to argue that it should be classed as a Christmas story. The treasured classic follows the lives of the four March sisters (Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy) from the innocence of childhood into the tribulations of womanhood during the American Civil War. Though the sisters branch out to follow their separate dreams, their bond is the absolute heart of the story. Little Women never fails to make me cry and I’ll be re-reading it every December for the foreseeable (for the swoon-worthy character of Laurie, if nothing else!).
Hogfather
Terry Pratchett
As weird and wonderful as you’d expect (given the author), this is undoubtedly a seasonal favourite of mine. When belief in the Hogfather fades, Death must take up the mantle of descending chimneys and doing his best to ho ho ho his way through the crisis while his granddaughter races against time to restore order. A whimsical ride from start to finish, Hogfather is surprisingly touching in how it handles the value of belief and the importance of innocence in the face of cynicism.
