Serving delicious Northumbrian ice cream since in 2009, Spurreli's award-winning ice cream is a seaside staple, and they offer both dairy and non-dairy options in a range of ever-changing flavours. All the milk they use is sourced from a local pedigree herd of Ayrshire and Short Horn cows and previous flavours have included rhubarb crumble, Jaffa Cake and even Liquorice Allsorts.
Morwick Dairy
Morwick Farm, Acklington, Morpeth
With 16 counter flavours, Morwick Dairy is well worth visit. Their ice cream is made in small batches and uses local produce to ensure quality. Try their salted liquorice, or their sea buckthorn, which has an orangey-peach taste. Plus, the parlour’s also dog friendly, with lactose-free, reduced sugar ice cream available for your pooch.

With multiple locations across the North East, there’s no denying the success of award-winning Di Meo’s. Whether it’s for a cool-down at one of their seaside locations or a sweet treat after a stroll around the Ouseburn, their gelato, the recipe of which dates back to 1925, always hits the spot. They stock both classic and unusual flavours; for something a bit different, we recommend their Battenberg flavour.
Ciccarelli

Ciccarelli have more than 100 different flavours to choose from and roots dating back to the 1960s. Earlier this year, they released a special blue vanilla and banana ripple flavour intended to resemble the Ukrainian flag, with 10 percent of all profits donated to the British Red Cross and Ukraine Crisis Appeal. They also won the trophy for Best Vanilla Gelato 2022 at the National Ice Cream Championships.

A Geordie favourite of young and old alike, Mark Toney have ice cream cafés throughout the city. With 120 years behind them, this family run, Italian business is as authentic as you can get. Their ice cream is based on an original Italian family recipe and the Amaretto flavour is divine.
Minchella & Co
9-11 Ocean Road, South Shields
Minchella & Co have been creating ice cream in South Shields since 1942, originally opening to serve ice cream to miners after a long day at work. Their Ocean Road parlour is one of the oldest businesses in South Shields, and they have been voted ICA National Ice Cream Champion, with their pistachio ice cream voted best flavour in the UK. Their list of flavours is small, but each is delicious and they also offer sundaes with various toppings.
Pacitto
29 High Street, Redcar
Pacitto’s in Redcar offers a love-it-or-hate-it North Yorkshire delicacy, lemon top ice cream. Whipped vanilla ice cream is served in a cone and topped with tart lemon sorbet for a creamy yet refreshing treat. They also do a strawberry top, for a sweeter, fruity option. We’re huge fans.
Wensleydale Ice Cream Parlour
Hardbanks Barn, Thornton Rust, Leyburn
Hillside Jersey cows produce the milk for this Yorkshire ice cream, and the flavour speaks for itself. Offering a Just Jersey flavour alongside a range of classic options, it’s a perfect Dales pitstop.
Mr.Moos
Southfield House Farm, Skipsea
Near the quaint seaside village of Skipsea, Mr. Moo have more than 30 flavours including orange marmalade and Turkish delight. They’ve won multiple awards since opening in 2003, and you can even buy their ice cream to take home in a variety of tub sizes.
Amorino

Founded in Paris, Amorino are a chain of gelato shops famous for their rose-shaped scoops. At their shop in Leeds, they offer classic cones as well as sundaes, shakes and even gelato macarons. Their chai latte flavour is great, and the lime and basil sorbet makes for a refreshing cooler on a sunny day in the city.
Pilgrims Gelato

All the ice cream at Pilgrims is vegan, though it’s so tasty and creamy that you’d never guess. Created by a family who struggle with food intolerances, all their ice cream is free from eggs, dairy and lactose. Located on the picturesque and seldom accessible Holy Island, it’s worth planning a trip for flavours such as sea salt blue vanilla alone.

LICC, based in York, serve the most unusual flavours around. Fresh avocado, marmite and watermelon are all varieties they’ve served, though don’t worry – they have the classics too. They go by the motto that no one is too big for ice cream and readily welcome adults and children alike, and cater to furry friends too, with dog gelato served with a biscuit on top.
