When it comes to the North East, dining by the seaside is always something special

Whether you're seeking classic fish and chips or indulgent seaside delicacies, we've picked our favourite seafood restaurants and cafés up and down the coast to visit this summer.

Coulls Fish Restaurant

A great place for a filling fish supper in Berwick, Coulls is always busy and is a firm favourite with the locals. Expect the classics here including haddock, cod, fishcakes and scampi. There is the option to sit in here, but we like to take our food to go and enjoy a stroll beside the water.

The Lord Crewe

Boasting an AA Rosette award for culinary excellence, The Lord Crewe is in prime position in the shadow of the impressive Bamburgh Castle and has a menu packed full of local seaside produce cooked exceptionally well (plus a range of other dishes besides). Whether you stop by for lunch or settle in for a late night supper, you’re in for a treat.

Richard Sim’s The Potted Lobster has a deserved reputation for excellent cooking, offering laid-back and relaxed bistro-style dining in one of Northumberland’s most popular seaside villages. They use fresh, local ingredients to create all their dishes, whether you’re tucking into Lindisfarne oysters with a glass of rosé on the terrace out front, or indulging in locally-caught lobster inside. The Jolly Fisherman

No trip to the coast is complete without stopping by the iconic Jolly Fisherman, which serves up home-cooked meals using the best local produce. Dine with panoramic views of Dunstanburgh Castle and the North Sea from both the restaurant and the beer garden, and enjoy everything from Lindisfarne oysters and seafood platters to luxury fish pie and The Jolly’s famous crab soup and sandwiches.

Lewis’s Fish Restaurant

A staple in Seahouses for years, Lewis’s on Main Street is a great family-run place to get some traditional fish and chips. Take a seat in the restaurant where you can find everything from lemon sole and breaded haddock to fishcakes and cod (and be sure to keep an eye on the specials menu which is regularly updated), or visit the takeaway side to enjoy your chips smothered in salt and vinegar down by the harbour.

The Old Boat House

On Amble harbour, the team at The Old Boat House expertly prepare delicious seafood dishes, made with only the freshest local ingredients. This award-winning restaurant regularly updates its menu with new and innovative dishes, however it’s their famous seafood sharing platter which has visitors returning time and again – think whole lobster, Lindisfarne oysters, prawns, smoked mackerel and fish goujons served with dips, chips and homemade bread.

Trenchers

Under the magnificent dome of Whitley Bay’s Spanish City on the seafront, Trenchers serves up award-winning fish and chips cooked to perfection as well as other classic seaside dishes such as Whitby scampi, fish pie and king prawn and cod bites. They also offer takeaway options – perfect for a stroll along the promenade.

The Landing

Only 100 metres from Beadnell Bay, The Landing is a fun and relaxed beach bar and kitchen which has won over the locals with its fresh food and friendly service. Take a seat on the large covered terrace for breakfast, and in the evening tuck into seaside delicacies like Lindisfarne oysters, pan-fried sea bass and Indonesian seafood curry. There’s also a decent wine list here to pair perfectly with whatever you choose.

Fisherman’s Bay

Another seaside gem in Whitley Bay, Fisherman’s Bay uses only sustainable fish and British farmed potatoes for their delicious fish and chips. With more than 25 years of experience in the industry, the team here bring their expertise to the kitchen and offer everything from shrimp rolls to Whitby scampi and chips. There’s a good children’s menu here too so the whole family can get in on the action.

Jasper’s Bistro 

This intimate bistro in Amble is a popular spot with locals and is well worth a visit. They regularly update their specials to reflect the freshest local produce – past dishes like curried seabass have been a real hit with diners. For something truly spectacular, choose the Jasper’s Seafood Platter, piled high with lobster, oysters and mussels (only available when ordered in advance).

Spanish City is home to another dining gem that is a must for foodies: 1910 boasts stunning panoramic sea views and serves opulent steak and seafood dishes. Expect to find tempura squid, roast king scallops, crayfish caesar salad and oysters (with dressings like gin pickled cucumber and caviar, and tabasco and lemon) on the menu.

The View

Aptly named, The View is entirely glass-fronted and has unparalleled views across Long Sands Beach. The lunch menu here is filled with seaside classics like king prawn scampi and chips, as well as specialty dishes such as seafood lasagne and roasted Siri Siri salmon fillet. There’s a good drinks menu here too.

Tucked away on King Edward’s Bay, this hugely popular beach restaurant serves the freshest fish sourced from local day boats, meaning the menu changes to reflect what’s been caught that day. Expect lobster, surf and turf, monkfish and squid cooked simply over a real charcoal fire. Our tip? Book a deckchair and a fire pit for an unforgettable sunset supper (with a bottle of bubbly of course).

Longsands Fish Kitchen

Right in the heart of Tynemouth, the menu here covers a whole variety of seaside delicacies including seafood coconut curry, cod fillet burgers and fish tacos. Unlike your traditional chippy, Longsands also serve fishcakes, tiger prawns with chilli jam and cod fish finger sandwiches to enjoy by the beach. Their specials like their sesame tuna steak with jasmine rice and pickled salad are great too.

SIX

This unique breakfast, brunch and dinner spot boasts incredible views of the coastline from its spot in Roker. Here you can expect small plates ranging from delicious crab on toast to buttery garlic prawns, and impressive sharing boards filled with plenty of local cheeses. There is also a sharing Sunday lunch board but our pick would be their seafood platter – the perfect way to indulge during a trip to the coast.

Colmans Seafood Temple

Serving some of the finest seafood and fish and chips since 1926, you can be sure of the quality when you dine at Colmans Seafood Temple. Tide

A brand new dining experience in Seaham for 2024, Tide can be found right on the seafront and serves great breakfasts and lunches (with plans for a dinner service soon). In the meantime, enjoy dishes such as smoked mackerel salad, sourdough crumpets with crab, walnut and apple, and roast turbot with confit butterbeans.

The Seaview Restaurant

With enviable views of a long stretch of golden sand, dramatic cliffs and a historic Victorian pier, The Seaview Restaurant is a firm favourite for many in Saltburn. Sourcing the best possible fish and seafood from local day boats, expect classic cod and chips and pan-fried halibut. Our favourite is their luxury fish pie, made with scallops, clams, mussels, salmon, cod and haddock.
