The serene surroundings of Tewkesbury Park Hotel belie its rather more bloody history, but the only battles now being fought here are on it’s magnificent golf course

Had we checked in to Tewkesbury Park Hotel on 4 May 1471 we would have had the perfect vantage point, from our second floor corner room, to watch one of the decisive battles of the War of the Roses unfold. As it turned out our suite, named after the Duke of Somerset, and one of nine which take their titles from key characters who fought in the Battle of Tewkesbury, provided views of an altogether different battle – golf!

Conveniently situated outside the pretty Gloucestershire town of Tewkesbury, only five minutes from the M5’s junction nine, the hotel is set in 163 acres of undulating parkland with uninterrupted views of the surrounding countryside.

The hotel boasts an 18-hole, par 73 golf course, academy course and practice range. The Leisure Club’s sauna, steam room, indoor swimming pool, hot tub and gym provide a welcome alternative if golf is not your game and there are tennis and squash courts too.

We made good use of the swimming pool (check the swim timetable as the leisure facilities are open to locals on a membership basis, and there are adult- only swim sessions in the evening) and in one of the two beautifully refurbished new spa rooms we enjoyed a traditional Swedish massage from the range of treatments available.

Tewkesbury Park has recently completed an extensive, two year, £4 million renovation program including nine new luxury historic suites, two meeting rooms, an orangery, cocktail lounge and two spa rooms. The result cleverly combines the original historic features with a contemporary palette of colours and luxurious soft furnishings.

‘Tewkesbury Park’s location makes it the perfect base for exploring the beautiful Malvern Hills and the pretty villages of the Cotswolds’

Our suite was at once both spacious and light, yet cosy. The warm soft tones of the luxurious furnishings blended easily with the contemporary fixtures and fittings. All 94 bedrooms here boast new Hypnos beds, Nespresso coffee machines, 40” smart TVs and WiFi. Our super king size bed was without doubt one of the most comfortable beds we’ve ever had the fortune to sleep in.

For our first night we dined off the à la carte menu, having enjoyed a glass of fizz on the terrace taking in the last of evening summer sun. Executive Chef Anuj Thakur makes full use the abundance of excellent local producers and of real note was the Gloucester Old Spot pork cooked three ways and the Sticky Toffee Pudding with Butterscotch Sauce and Honeycomb Ice Cream.

The local cheese selection was outstanding and hugely generous in quantity. The dining menu for dinner, bed and breakfast deals which we sampled on our second evening has a reduced number of choices but is still a very high standard.

Tewkesbury Park’s location makes it the perfect base for exploring the beautiful Malvern Hills and the pretty villages of the Cotswolds, and Tewkesbury itself is a charming town with a wonderful mix of historic buildings and an eclectic selection of shops.

The 12th century abbey is well worth a visit. Among many other fascinating aspects the abbey boasts an impressive collection of medieval, Victorian and modern stained glass windows, a 17th century organ which is still in daily use (reputedly played by the poet John Milton) and the largest Norman church spire in existence.

The hotel appeals equally to corporate customers, to those wanting a golfing break or simply a quiet getaway and an excuse to explore the beautiful surrounding countryside. Tewkesbury Park is definitely on the up and one to watch.
