We design and create hand-blown glass lighting that celebrates tradition, coupled with modern design, craftsmanship, uniqueness and sustainability. We sell directly to the public for residential projects including kitchens, dining and bedrooms. We also sell to select independent retailers and work closely with interior designers, commercial project teams and architects.
Do you make all your own products?
Absolutely! In a world where mass production dominates, we pride ourselves on our commitment to championing British manufacturing. Our lighting is hand-blown in the Glow Lighting glass blowing studio, and all of our packaging and components are carefully sourced in the UK wherever possible, supporting other small British businesses and thus reducing our carbon footprint.
Tell us about your new studio.
In 2023 Glow Lighting invested heavily in the manufacturing process, establishing our onsite glass blowing studio. This has enabled us to focus on exciting new designs, ensuring consistent quality assurance and breathing life into traditional artisan skills that are quickly becoming redundant in the UK.
What can people expect when they visit you?
When you choose to shop with us, you will be guided by our small and friendly team who will be ready to answer all of your questions. We can offer you design and technical advice and direct you through the whole process, whether it be for an individual lighting piece, or for lighting for your whole home. We pride ourselves on delivering excellent, tailored customer service.
What styles and products are popular at the moment?
Our clear glass shades are always a firm favourite with our customers. In particular, the clear glass Jules – its simplicity and elegance mean it’s still a favoured product. The classic clear ribbed Molly is also a popular choice.
We use superior glass for all our products and the clarity of the clear glass when seen in person exudes quality and finesse. When paired with our modern or antique metal finishes, these clear glass shades can be modernised or aged to fit with your interior scheme. Customers can also choose from a wide range of classic and contemporary cables, ensuring each piece is truly bespoke.
As we enter sunnier days, our coloured glass, especially the softer hues of pale blues, pinks, greens and yellows are a must-buy. The pretty colours brighten up the darkest of spaces and add an elevated feature to any room. All of our lighting can be hung in singles or clusters, so each piece is fully customisable to suit our client’s needs.
Our customers often choose to add a wall light or matching table lamp to complement their interior scheme. We also offer an etching service in various designs which brings an extra individual touch to their lighting.
What’s the best part and the hardest part of what you do?
I am lucky in that my job allows me to be truly creative, designing new products that you know are unique and local. Seeing my ideas come to life is very special. It’s always a joy sharing in our customers’ delight with their lighting, and the positive feedback we get is very rewarding. Welcoming visitors to our showroom is also a treat. Very often people think they want one specific product but more often than not, after discussing their requirements with us, they choose something they may not have originally considered.
Every day at Glow Lighting is varied, which keeps us all engaged and excited. However, running your own company can have its challenges. Operating a small business in difficult economic times and juggling being a mother, wife and company director keeps me on my toes!
Are you working on any exciting projects at the moment?
We are currently designing and working on a bespoke cluster of coloured globe pendants adorned with baubles for a Grade II-listed property here in North Yorkshire. It’s an absolute privilege and a chance to be creative and expressive whilst being sympathetic to the heritage of a special and unique building. I can’t wait to see the finished product in situ, and it’s always a pleasure working with clients who want to share their ideas with you.
