Located just outside of Stoney Middleton, a characterful and historic village in the heart of the Peak District, Rock Mill Retreat is both a state-of-the-art sanctuary for health and wellness and a unique accommodation option

At Rock Mill Retreat, the wellness facilities that guests have exclusive access to include medical-grade photobiomodulation therapy (900 lights at two different wavelengths to provide optimal treatment), saunas, photon lights, PEMF mats, and more.

Photobiomodulation is the administration of low-level infrared light and is a safe and non-invasive procedure which improves cognition and emotion, as well as enhancing brain metabolic activity. Scientists are also currently studying the benefits of infrared light stimulation in ongoing research for adults with ADHD and bipolar disorder.

Theoretical biophysicist Doctor Fritz Albert Popp concluded that the function of our entire metabolism is dependent on light. He introduced the concept of biophotons (ultra-weak photon emissions that are involved in cellular communication and regulation) that play a crucial role in maintaining health and potentially influencing genetic activity. For example, cancer could result from a breakdown in the coherent emission of biophotons. But how much natural light do we get around here? Certainly not enough for optimal (or even sub-optimal) functioning of our bodies. And a couple of weeks a year in the south of Spain is not going to fix that...

So how does one increase that coherent emission of biophotons in their sun-deprived cells? By consuming good quality, unprocessed foods, and by going outside in the sun (while exposing as much skin surface as possible), or by using photobiomodulation (red-light) therapy in the correct spectrum of light. Other ways to increase the emissions of biophotons are physical exercise, meditation, mindfulness, as well as heat therapy (sauna).

When light interacts with an electron, it can move the electron to a different orbit around the atom’s nucleus. This process is fundamental to all chemical reactions and, by extension, to life. However, only light with a certain wavelength, which corresponds to the energy needed, can cause this shift. The electron will only change orbits if the light provides exactly the right amount of energy.

Neurosurgeon Jack Kruse posits that light, particularly red and near-infrared, stimulates the mitochondria's electron transport chain, leading to improved energy production at a cellular level. This is seen as critical for health optimisation and potentially reversing or mitigating chronic diseases. Likewise (more than 10 years ago) renowned biophysicist Tiina Karu was suggesting in her work that photobiomodulation should be considered as a drug equivalent.

Photobiomodulation has been used in clinical practice for more than 50 years, and its action mechanisms on cellular and molecular levels have been studied for over 40 years. It has been used in treating healing-resistant wounds and ulcers, spinal cord injuries, nervous system injuries, and in pain management. It is used, for instance, in treating Parkinson’s, as it prevents mitochondrial dysfunction and dopamine loss. It also reduces inflammation, improves bone density, enhances cognitive function, improves sleep, increases energy levels, and boosts collagen, making skin look younger and the hair and nails grow stronger.

As more and more research in this area comes out, it is simply astounding what photobiomodulation can help with.

At Rock Mill Retreat, the wellness facilities that guests have exclusive access to include medical-grade photobiomodulation therapy, saunas, photon lights, PEMF mats, and more.

Other facilities include an EMF-shielded king-size bedroom with a grounded bed, fully-equipped kitchen, café, restaurant, meeting space and lounge, children's playground, barbecue and picnic area, and ample car park (with EV charging points). World-famous climbing walls and caves are accessible from the doorstep, and the area is rich with walking and hiking paths, surrounded by lush forests, gorgeous rivers, dramatic limestone gritstone edges, expansive moorlands, and the most breathtaking rolling hills.
