Ice is nice…

From Friday (23rd) to Saturday (24th) head to Durham to experience the return of the iconic Fire and Ice Festival. This year’s theme is Stars of The Screen so keep your eyes peeled for everything from Daleks and Thor’s Hammer to the Millennium Falcon. Enjoy live demonstrations, interactive displays and incredible sculptures as you explore the historic city. Best of all? It’s free!

Flower power…

With signs of spring everywhere, enjoy some sunshine this weekend and go on the hunt for some early blooms. At Wallington in Northumberland, their stunning crocus lawn is now in bloom and the blanket of purple flowers is a refreshing pop of colour after the long winter months. In their woodland, snowdrops are also in bloom so keep your eyes peeled for them. Further south, the Stray in the centre of Harrogate boasts more than 200 acres of green parkland and is known for its breathtaking spring blooms. For more options, we’ve rounded up the best places across the North East and Yorkshire to see snowdrops here.

Zest for life…

Take the family to Life Science Centre this weekend for a great time. Expect fireballs, an explosion of colour and interplanetary weather forecasts at this award-winning centre that has just reopened its doors after a month-long closure which has seen a number of additions, including a revamped Play Zone and a new show on Life’s large digital ‘Sphere’, featuring TV weatherman Ross Hutchinson giving a fun-filled planetary forecast, including an explanation of why it’s raining diamonds on Saturn!

Comedy chops…

The North East’s own Sarah Millican is hitting the stage with her newest tour Late Bloomer from Thursday (22nd) to Saturday (24th) at O2 City Hall Newcastle, so grab your tickets now for a night of silly gaffes and good fun. The legendary Peter Kay is currently touring and will be at Sheffield Utilita Arena on Friday (23rd). There are limited tickets available so get them while you can.

Marg-madness…

Thursday (22nd) is World Margarita Day and what better way to celebrate than to head to Newcaslte’s newest margarita bar, El Guapo, for a cheeky drink (or two – this is the city centre’s first dedicated margarita bar). Lobo Rojo in North Shields is another great choice for drinks with friends, boasting beautiful views across the water and flavoured margaritas served by the jug. Further south, Neon Cactus in Leeds is a great option for a tequila-based tipple or two with original cocktails and great sharing dishes to graze on. For something a bit different, host your own margarita party and serve up these delicious and easy to make margarita cupcakes.

Rick-rolling good time…

Want to catch a gig this weekend? Rick Astley would never let you down. You can see him at Newcastle Utilita Arena on Friday (23rd) and then again at Leeds First Direct Arena on Saturday (24th). Expect to hear fresh music from his most recent album Are We There Yet? as well as some famous golden oldies to sing along to.

Viking trails…

Enjoy the iconic Bamburgh castle like you’ve never seen it before with a guided tour led by Ragnar Lundgren. Explore the grounds of the stronghold as well as the breathtaking interior as you learn about the real history behind the smash-hit show The Last Kingdom – perfect for fans of the show or anyone fascinated by the region’s Viking history. Make sure you check out the display of iconic props and costumes from the series that are currently being exhibited in the castle. There is still tour availability on Sunday (25th) so get your tickets now.

Cheeky tipple…

If margaritas aren’t your thing, skip the tequila and head to Newcastle Whisky Festival this weekend (at Newcastle Civic Centre on Saturday 24th). Sample some of the best whiskies from across the globe and test the exhibitors’ knowledge as you sip – they know their whiskies inside and out so you’re in for a real treat. Want a night of letting loose? Get ready for fun, food, drinks and plenty of games at Roxy Ball Room’s first venue in York, The Stonebow. This is the ultimate playground for grown ups with karaoke, bowling, beer pong and air hockey. The venue serves up delicious American-style pizzas and hot dogs with a great range of sides to feast on as you play the night away. Opening night is Friday 23rd so make sure you check it out.
