An OG of the national Neapolitan craze, we head to Rudy's newest location on Newcastle's Grey Street to see if their slices live up to the hype

On a dark and dreary midwinter night, we head to Grey Street in search of something delicious to chase the cold away.
In Brief

Highlight: The Tarantina pizza – if anchovies are an option we’re having them.

What We Wish We’d Tried: The monthly special when we stopped by (with olive crumb, mushrooms, artichokes and truffle oil) was calling us.

Our Take Away: Delicious, cosy and conveniently placed for an after-work bite, we’ll definitely be back.

When we heard that Rudy’s, specialists in classic Neapolitan slices, was opening its first joint in Newcastle, we knew we had to give it a try. I confess that pizza is rarely my first port of call when it comes to picking dinner, so a chance to try something different was exciting.

The new venue is in good company, sitting neatly on Grey Street close to other popular after-work haunts – Sushi Me Rollin’ is right next door and Café Mercy is just across the street. Although my dinner companion and I have come straight from work, the place is already a hub of activity – always a good sign.

Inside, it’s busy without being crowded and the lights are kept low enough that the place feels cosy and intimate. Our drinks come, one soft and one hard Rudy’s homemade lemonade, and the pizzas arrive promptly.

Always a sucker for honey chilli anything, we’ve ordered the triple pepperoni which comes drizzled in the sauce. For something salty, we also choose the Tarantina pizza with olives, capers, and anchovies. I love my pizza floppy with big crusts and these are just the ticket (not to mention huge!). To maintain the illusion that we’re sticking to our 2025 health goals, we order a caprese piccolo side salad which is wonderfully fresh and great to share.

The portions were more than generous but there’s always room for something sweet, so we finished our meal with a tiramisu (because of course) split between us – although Rudy’s Rum Baba, a rum-soaked sponge with cherry, was a close second. Full, happy and a new pizza convert, we know we’ve found a new weeknight regular.
