Come rain or shine, there's always something great to do in the North East and Yorkshire

Whether you're visiting the seaside, want a movie night in, or you're setting out on a family-friendly bike ride, there are plenty of ways to stay busy this weekend.

King of the castle…

Back by popular demand after last year’s success, Knight School is making a triumphant return to Auckland Castle. Get a taste of medieval life as you learn jousting, swordplay, and archery skills before graduating and being knighted on the steps of Auckland Castle – with sessions available all weekend, this is a great way to spend the day with the kids.

Music to our ears…

Celebrate all thing electro at Northern Electrics Festival this weekend. Running for two days across Friday and Saturday (9th and 10th) at Alphabetti Theatre and The Lubber Fiend in Newcastle, this will definitely get the blood pumping. Northern Kin Festival is also returning this weekend for its sixth year, running from Friday to Sunday (9th–11th) at Thornley Hall Farm in Durham. Expect music from the best indie bands around, as well as DJs, and traders selling records, clothing and more. In Yorkshire, The Magpies Festival returns to Sutton Park (9th–10th), and will include everything from local artists to food stalls and workshops.

Going for gold…

The Summer Olympics officially (and sadly) come to a close on Sunday (11th). So far the North East and Yorkshire have done the country proud with a haul of medals. Amongst others, Gateshead’s own Kieran Reilly has earned himself a silver medal in the BMX freestyle at his first ever Olympics, and Peterlee’s Lauren Irwin secured bronze in rowing. In Yorkshire, Tom Pidcock achieved gold with a spectacular performance in the men’s cross-country mountain biking and Georgina Brayshaw was part of the team to earn gold in the women’s quadruple sculls.

Sun, sea and sand…

For a day out with the family, there’s nothing better than fresh sea air, building sandcastles and jumping the waves. Cheswick Sands towards the top of Northumberland is a great expanse of sand with plenty of room for the kids to let off some steam, while in Yorkshire, North Landing beach at Flamborough is famous for its fascinating smuggler’s caves and stunning views – well worth a day trip.

Culture vulture…

Newcastle’s newest arts festival, Novum, is back for 2024 and bigger than ever. Head to Newcastle Civic Centre from Thursday to Sunday (8th–11th) for a whole host of live performances, interactive installations, live music and family activities. On Thursday evening, catch a free aerial circus performance from Cirque Bijou, Friday evening sees the high energy Flamingods perform, on Saturday you can expect storytelling and puppet shows in the Civic Centre Gardens, and throughout the weekend the Great North Museum Hancock is hosting interactive art exhibits.

Movie madness…

If you prefer to take it slow at the weekend, we recommend a DIY movie night – perfect for an impromptu date night or spending a quiet evening in with the kids. If you want to get the little ones involved in making a treat for the movie, try this simple and easy hundreds and thousands cake. Or for something really special step your popcorn game up with this deliciously decadent butterscotch popcorn cheesecake.

On your bike…

A great way to explore the area is by bike and the River Tyne loop from Newcastle to Wylam takes in much of the Tyne Valley (and is a mostly paved route), with plenty of spots to stop for a rest or refuel. For a shorter ride, Yorkshire’s Nidderdale Greenway is a good choice if you have the kids in tow. Just over four miles in length, the route takes you from Ripley to Harrogate along a repaved railway line.

Party animals…

Try something different this weekend and head to Castle Howard. For the first time, they are hosting a silent disco on Saturday (10th) in their Boar Garden. Enjoy all of your favourite ‘90s tunes as you dance the night away in a truly unique venue. Beginning at 7pm, book your tickets online now so you don’t miss out.
