It’s a Dog’s Life: Winnie’s Sporting Weekend
Our canine columnist is back
Bon jour mes amies et petit chiens!
You may be wondering why I’ve gone all French on you this merry Sunday, well I’ll explain. I love my sport and this weekend is a cracker, even if English teams are a bit thin on the ground, except Liverpool, of course. We have European rugby in Marseilles, Champions League football in Paris and the Monaco Grand Prix for petrol heads and bon viveurs alike. I hope to see a fair bit of the action.
But closer to home a massive shout out for the Yorkshire town of Huddersfield. On Saturday the Giants face the Wigan Warriors in the Challenge Cup final and today one of my favourite teams, The Terriers AKA Huddersfield Town, take on Nottingham Forest. Both fixtures are going to be really tough but I’m hopeful of a South Yorkshire double…come on those Terriers, even if you can be a bit yappy and aggressive at times.
The cricket season is coming into its own and that’s my favourite sport. Joe Root has given up the captaincy (sensibly in my view) and hopefully Ben Stokes and new coach Brendon McCullum can knock a few heads together (not literally mind boys). Cricket pitches can be found all over the place and if you want to find one with a beautiful backdrop which is convenient for both Yorkshire and the North East get yourself to Raby Castle, it’s a real beaut but there are many more and I just love the peace, the afternoon tea, the deckchairs… what could be more English? Perhaps more French dogs and people should be encouraged to watch cricket.
So take care, keep your eye on the ball and always believe in better.
