Northumberland-born LJ Ross is the bestselling author of the DCI Ryan murder mystery series. Each month, she shares an exclusive Book Club pick with Living North

This month's LJ Ross Book Club pick is a classic detective story first published in 1868, The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins.
The Moonstone

This month’s LJ Ross Book Club selection is The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins, first published in 1868 and widely considered to be one of the earliest examples of detective fiction. Its story unfolds through a series of narratives provided by multiple characters, each providing a different perspective on the mysterious disappearance of a fabulous diamond known as ‘The Moonstone’. The tale begins with Colonel Herncastle, a renowned adventurer, who first brings the stone back to England having looted it during his military service in India. He bequeaths The Moonstone to his niece, Rachel Verinder, on her 18th birthday—despite objections from his family, who say the stone is cursed. Later that very night, the diamond is stolen…

LJ’s Thoughts:

‘The Moonstone is rightly considered to be one of the finest works of detective fiction, not only thanks to an engaging investigatory plotline, but because, as with all good fiction, its themes reflect the social realities of the day. In this case, Collins explores Victorian class structure, colonialism and social expectations, alongside superstition that weaves its way throughout an intricate, well-structured plot peppered with memorable characters. It’s a staple read for any true fan of the genre!’
