The Most Popular Musicals Coming to the North East and Yorkshire
Hamilton, Wicked, Six and Mamma Mia Coming to North East and Yorkshire Theatres
To celebrate World Music Day on 21st June, Slot Tracker have discovered the most popular musicals by using Spotify data to gather the most streamed musical playlists in the world. Many of them are stopping by some of our favourite venues in the North East and Yorkshire.
Not only does Hamilton have the most streamed album, but the hit song Alexander Hamilton is also the most streamed song. Mamma Mia! takes second place with 1,587,994,591 streams and Dear Evan Hansen ranks third, with 845,678,685 streams – almost 45 percent more than Wicked. Dear Evan Hansen is currently only touring in the US, more dates are set to be announced for Hadestown (which ranked sixth), The Phantom of the Opera is currently in London so we’re awaiting UK tour dates (that ranked seventh), and the next tour for The Book of Mormon (which was eighth on the list) is yet to be announced, but you can read our review here.
Here’s where you can see the most popular musicals in the North, and where they ranked in Slot Tracker’s list.
First: Hamilton
From 28th January 2025
The Alhambra Theatre, Bradford
From 17th June 2025
Sunderland Empire
Hamilton is loved by fans due to its fresh approach to musical theatre, making use of hip-hop, R&B and other contemporary music styles to tell a historical story – a work of art by Lin-Manuel Miranda. The musical’s most streamed song is Alexander Hamilton with over 263 million streams, almost double the streams of Mamma Mia!’s most streamed song Lay All Your Love On Me. Based on the 2004 biography Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow, the musical covers the life of American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton and his involvement in the American Revolution. When it comes to the North East and Yorkshire, we know we’ll want to be in The Room Where It Happens.

Second: Mamma Mia!
14th–18th June 2023
Scarborough Open Air Theatre
This jukebox musical which premiered in London’s West End in 1999 pays tribute to Abba’s much-loved music from the 70s. It’s a sing-along favourite and has been made into two equally as popular films. Don’t miss your chance to see this ultimate feel-good show, about a mother, a daughter and three possible dads on a Greek island, live on stage and under the stars at the Scarborough Open Air Theatre – and you’ll be saying Thank You For The Music.

Third: Wicked
16th April–19th May 2024
The Alhambra Theatre, Bradford
24th September–20th October 2024
Sunderland Empire
When Dorothy famously triumphed over the Wicked Witch of the West, we only heard one side of the story. Gregory Maguire‘s acclaimed 1995 novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, re-imagines the Land of Oz and this musical has been a major hit since it first took to the stage. Thank Goodness it’s flying to Bradford and Sunderland to entertain us, and it’s sure to be Wonderful.

4th July–8th July 2023
Newcastle Theatre Royal
1st–6th August 2023
Leeds Grand Theatre
The international smash hit musical SIX follows the live of the six wives of Henry VIII as you’ve never seen them before. They each take to the mic to tell their tales, remixing 500 years of history into an 80-minute celebration of 21st century girl power. If you’re a musical fan like us, booking tickets for this show will be All You Wanna Do, and there’s No Way you’ll want to miss out on being a part of the audience.
