Marc Steutel will be looking forward to a new season as the Eagles hope for a better year and pre-season tittle-tattle sounds promising. The sport offers huge energy and a Friday night game is a great way to round off the week.

CRICKET
It’s been a disappointing season at Chester-le-Street in 2022, and with one home fixture left to play some necessary off-season pondering is needed. For a bit of international flair in September, England’s Women come to town and you can enjoy four days of end of season County Championship sport, and with Durham closely matched to Sussex in the league it could be an intriguing encounter.

RUGBY UNION
There’s so much to play for this year even if the drop is still not an option. There’s some genuine talent on offer but the class of the Gallagher Premiership is intense as early season home fixtures demonstrate and, as in recent seasons, a strong start seems essential.

FOOTBALL
There’s already talk in Newcastle about a potential European place after a strong start to their Premiership season. It’s been a resolute and robust start for the Toon Army as some other contenders have had indifferent results. This makes the 3–3 Manchester City home draw especially uplifting, with the crowd in outstanding form and the players giving it their all too. It’s early days, but a combination of new players and a much improved attitude of older squad members means the season should be fun. With an away fixture at Anfield looming you have to say consistency for a prolonged period will be required in this world-class league, but the omens thus far are good. Meanwhile, Sunderland fans have also enjoyed a terrific start to the season with some excellent results. Middlesbrough supporters will be less enamoured with their progress and an early September fixture against the Black Cats looks like the ideal opportunity to turn things round. The Pools have also started their season poorly and frankly the only way is up. In a packed fixture list this early autumn here are a few notes for your diary, depending on your allegiance.
