Pantomime Review: The Little Mermaid at Newcastle Theatre Royal
Newcastle Theatre Royal's panto is a must-see every Christmas, and this year we go under the sea for a hilarious and heart-warming, fin-tastically fun-filled show
Pinocchio was a hit last year and with the return of Danny Adams, Clive Webb, Chris Hayward and Joe McElderry we head into the theatre expecting great things. As ever, we’re not disappointed!
This year Danny is playing the laugh-a-minute Danny Crabstix, Ariel’s best friend in this new take on the much-loved tale. We find ourselves in King Triton’s kingdom where we’re introduced to the evil Sea Witch (boo!) and the fabulous Ariel, played by Maggie Lynne of Wicked, Grease and Hairspray fame.
Each of the character’s sparkling costumes are outstanding and the colourful set is captivating. There’s no chance of kids (and big kids) getting bored in this fast-paced show. Danny, as always, has us in fits of giggles from the off, and as much as Danny tries to stop him, there are plenty of opportunities for Joe McElderry to show off his fantastic voice, even treating us to a bit of opera, which we love! Joe’s always a part of the mayhem though – never one to shy away from Danny’s antics. It’s clear how much fun they’re having on stage, which means we’re having plenty of fun watching them!
This all-singing, all-dancing, and all-swimming panto brings all the joys you expect from Newcastle Theatre Royal to the stage – hilarious antics (foam, ladders and flying props), toe-tapping tunes and, of course, a happy ending.
The Little Mermaid plays at Newcastle Theatre Royal until 12th January. Tickets are available at theatreroyal.co.uk or by calling the box office on 0191 232 7010.
