Heading to the coast? Here's our pick of the perfect pubs beside the sea

These are our favourite places to get a pint in Northumberland, all within a short distance of the county's stunning coast.

The Jolly Fisherman

Haven Hill, Craster, Alnwick
NE66 3TR
01665 576461
thejollyfishermancraster.co.uk
An ever-popular spot with a dog-friendly bar and garden overlooking the harbour and the sea in the tiny village of Craster. Pick a window seat in the restaurant or, if it’s dry, a picnic table in the beer garden, and take in the views.

Black Swan Inn Black Swan Inn

Black Swan Inn

2 Union Street, Seahouses
NE68 7RT
01665 720227
northcoastcollective.co.uk/blackswan-inn
Following an extensive yet sympathetic restoration project, the Black Swan Inn (Seahouses’ oldest purpose–built pub) is now a must-visit gastropub. Ingredients are sourced locally, the drinks menu complements the dishes and in-house mixologists are more than happy to show off their skills when creating signature and traditional cocktails. Choose to relax in the bar with your four-legged friend, head to the main restaurant and orangery for an intimate dining experience or enjoy your meal al fresco if the Great British weather allows.

The Crown & Anchor Inn

The Market Place, Holy Island
TD15 2RX
01289 389215
holyislandcrown.co.uk
This inn has one of the most enviable locations, sat in the heart of Holy Island, and the beer garden takes full advantage of the views. Relax with a pint of Northumbrian ale facing the harbour, castle and priory, or head to the dog-friendly bar. The menu consists of an everchanging seasonal selection of pub classics done well including locally-sourced   sh and chips, pies and steaks, and there’s a range of vegetarian and vegan dishes too.

The Fishing Boat Inn

Boulmer Village, Boulmer, Alnwick NE66 3BP
01665 577750
thefishingboatinn.com
This little inn right on the coast in the village of Boulmer has stunning sea views. Enjoy a drink on the seaside terrace, in the conservatory or in the welcoming bar. The friendly staff serve a varied menu and blackboard specials – why not start with a Craster kipper pâté, followed by pan-fried hake? Lisa and the friendly team at the ‘FBI’ are always ready to welcome you - whether you are dining in the restaurant or simply stopping by for a drink as you head along the beach.

The Joiners Arms

Newton by the Sea, Alnwick
NE66 3EA
01665 376112
joiners-arms.com
At the top of the hill in High Newton, this pub offers honest, home-style cooking with plenty of variety on the menu, from sharers and stotties to pies and fish – but our pick is the mango chutney spiced Scotch egg, followed by catch of the day. There’s a good kids’ menu too and you can sit out in the beer garden when the sun shines.

The Ship Inn The Ship Inn

The Kings Arms

The Harbour, Seaton Sluice NE26 4RD
0191 237 0275

thekingsarms-ne.co.uk
At the very southern end of Northumberland this classic pub has one of the most enviable spots on the coast, looking out across the cliffs at Seaton Sluice harbour. There’s a sheltered garden to the rear for enjoying a pint with sea views, and more secluded benches which dot the side of the cliff.

The Ship Inn

Low Newton, Alnwick NE66 3EL
01665 576262
shipinnnewton.co.uk
Boasting one of the most scenic locations in Northumberland, The Ship Inn looks over the tiny green towards the beach and rolling waves at Low Newton. Arrive at the right time and you can see ‘The Lobster Man’ bringing a fresh catch up from Newton Bay, while meat is sourced from local farms. It’s hugely popular and a hub for the local community. They don’t take bookings for lunch, so make sure you go early (and in plenty of time for a walk along the stunning beach to build up an appetite).

The Lord Crewe

Front Street, Bamburgh NE69 7BL
01668 214243
lord-crewe.co.uk
Achieving an AA Rosette award for culinary excellence less than one year after opening (as well as an AA breakfast award) The Lord Crewe has set an incredible standard for good food by the coast. The location is just as impressive, with Bamburgh Castle and the sweeping sands of the Northumberland coastline only a stone’s throw away. The team specialise in luxurious seafood dishes including Lindisfarne oysters, grilled halibut and lobster Thermidor, and have rooms available so you can make your visit extra special with an extended staycation.
