Review: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at Sunderland Empire

A fantasmagorical show that is not to be missed
This dazzling production not only pays homage to the beloved 1968 film but reimagines it with fresh energy for a new generation. Ore Oduba shines as Caractacus Potts, bringing charm and heart to the role, while Ellie Nunn is effortlessly endearing as Truly Scrumptious. The Sherman Brothers’ timeless score – featuring favourites like Hushabye Mountain, Truly Scrumptious, and the unforgettable, Academy Award-nominated title song – had the audience thoroughly spellbound.

A particular highlight for my daughter was the comedic duo of Bulgarian spies, Boris (Adam Stafford) and Goran (Michael Joseph). Their antics had the kids giggling nonstop, while their cleverly crafted one-liners gave the grown-ups a few cheeky laughs that sailed blissfully over little ears. Charlie Brooks, stepping into the role of the Childcatcher, brings a fresh presence to the stage, adding a new layer of intrigue to the classic antagonist. Martin Callaghan and Jenny Gayner as the Baron and Baroness light up the stage with their playful, larger-than-life performances, bringing plenty of laughs and charm. Meanwhile, Jeremy, Jemima, and Liam Fox as Grandpa Potts provide a warm and heartfelt counterbalance, grounding the show with their endearing presence and beautifully complementing the vibrant energy of the ensemble.

And of course, no Chitty Chitty Bang Bang would be complete without its iconic flying car—and this version delivers in spectacular style. The technical wizardry behind the airborne scenes is truly jaw-dropping, leaving the entire theatre in collective amazement. As anticipated, the show came to a joyous close with the full cast joining together for a rousing rendition of the iconic title song. The audience was on their feet, clapping and singing along in a heartwarming moment of celebration.
For those seeking an unforgettable theatrical experience, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is at Sunderland Empire until 27th April 2025.
