Review: We Check Into an Elegant Mayfair Hotel

Bordering leafy Hyde Park, London's Mayfair is where you'll find elegant Georgian townhouses and exclusive hotels sandwiched between independent boutiques, world-famous retailers, contemporary art galleries and traditional pubs

Tucked away in the very heart of Mayfair, The Mayfair Townhouse is the perfect blend of old-world glamour and modern-day luxury. A short stroll from the iconic shops, galleries, and dining spots that make this part of London so renowned, the hotel is a quiet escape where every detail has been designed to create a sense of comfort and exclusivity.

Sharing its postcode with some of the most iconic British landmarks, we felt a thrill simply getting to the Townhouse – passing Buckingham Palace, strolling through Green Park, and walking by the unmissable Fortnum & Mason (a festive must-visit during the winter months). With such esteemed neighbours, staying at The Mayfair Townhouse makes you feel every bit like royalty.

The hotel exudes quiet sophistication, and the hotel’s lobby is super chic. With polished marble floors, luxurious velvet seating, and sleek, contemporary design it’s a welcoming space that sets the tone – stylish yet relaxed, and with a level of service that makes you feel immediately at ease.

After a swift and seamless check-in, we were shown to our room. Rich, deep tones of navy and gold were complemented by large windows that allowed natural light to flood the room, affording a glimpse of Mayfair’s elegant streets below.

No stay at The Mayfair Townhouse would be complete without a visit to its stylish Dandy Bar. The intimate space, with soft lighting, velvet armchairs and a striking marble bar, is the perfect setting for a cocktail before dinner. The cocktail menu is a work of art in itself, showcasing a range of unique and seasonal creations, all crafted with the finest ingredients, and the lively bar staff ensure every sip is an experience. Simply share your tastes with them, and they’ll make the perfect recommendation. It’s the kind of place where you could easily lose track of time, with each drink offering a new and exciting flavour to explore.

You are not short of dining options in Mayfair – for us, it was a short walk down the street to Mount St. Restaurant – one of Mayfair’s best kept secrets. The understated exterior of the restaurant gives little away, but inside, the atmosphere is warm, welcoming, and impeccably stylish.

The menu is a celebration of seasonal British produce, and we were immediately impressed by the care and thoughtfulness that had gone into each dish. We started with a delicate dish of fresh oysters, followed by a beautifully-prepared sharing rib of beef, paired with fresh and flavourful seasonal vegetables, perfect crispy potatoes and our choice of sauce. Every dish was expertly prepared and presented with finesse. The wine and cocktail list was impressive, and the staff here are knowledgeable and attentive. It was a dinner that felt both indulgent and effortless, in true Mayfair style.

The following morning we took the opportunity to explore our immediate surroundings and ended up at the Farm Shop, a delightful new addition to the local food scene – boasting its own wine bar, fromagerie and even a same-day roast chicken delivery service. This artisanal haven is filled with fresh, locally-sourced produce, from organic meats and cheeses to freshly baked breads and pastries. It’s a celebration of all things British, and the perfect place to unwind over a coffee and pastry. The staff here are clearly passionate about the products they sell. For us, the Farm Shop stop is a non-negotiable recommendation for the perfect trip to this part of London.

As our weekend draws to an end, we’re reluctant to say goodbye. London is always an exciting destination, but there's something especially enchanting about the city in the run-up to Christmas. No matter when you choose to visit, if you’re looking for a warm, stylish, and inviting place to stay in the most desirable spot in London, The Mayfair Townhouse certainly earns our highest praise.
