Review: What We Thought of the Award-Winning Musical Come From Away
The multi award-winning musical, Come From Away, has made its North East debut at Newcastle Theatre Royal
Direct from the West End (where it celebrated more than 1,000 performances), we’re told this uplifting true story has audiences on their feet night after night. So we enter Newcastle Theatre Royal’s with high hopes.
The true story follows the 7,000 air passengers who were grounded in Canada during the wake of 9/11, and who come together and forge friendships that will stay with them forever.
That includes the first female American Airlines captain, the quick-thinking town mayor, the mother of a New York firefighter and an eager local news reporter. The small Newfoundland community invites these ‘come from aways’ into their lives.
If 9/11 represented one of the world’s worst days, you may be surprised to hear that this musical uplifts the spirit like few others. It’s brilliant on every level as a work based on truth, with comedic and song and dance showmanship out of the heights of theatrical production.
The ensemble twin as hosts from Gander, Newfoundland and airline passengers caught up in the events that unfold around 9/11 and beyond. It’s a powerful, joyous, exceptional piece of work, showing the best of humankind and its spirit.
The audience were on their feet as the last note sounded and stayed there for minutes after applauding this unmissable performance… get a ticket!
Come From Away plays Newcastle Theatre Royal until Saturday 17th August 2024. Tickets can be purchased at theatreroyal.co.uk or from the Theatre Royal Box Office on 0191 232 7010.
