Following the success of its first two series, Robson Green's Weekend Escapes is coming back!

Filming has already begun and Robson says 'it's the best series yet'.

Made and produced in the North East by the locally-based Signpost Entertainment and Rivers Meet Productions, actor and angler Robson Green will once again explore the region’s coast and countryside, and elsewhere across the North.

Celebrating everything about the North East, Robson will continue to highlight the beauty of Northern England, but also the importance of reconnecting with nature.

‘I'm having the best time filming series three of Robson Green's Weekend Escapes with friends, family, and familiar faces,’ says Robson. ‘Once again, we take roads less travelled to a multitude of hidden gems that showcase the North in all its glory and we remind ourselves that we can seek serenity right on our doorstep, creating a wonderful comfort blanket for the soul. For me, it's the best series yet!’

In series three, he’ll be joined by presenter Helen Skelton, former world champion boxer Nicola Adams and comedian Rosie Jones, and the series will continue to showcase the unbeaten tracks around Northumberland, County Durham, North Yorkshire and the Lakes.

Robson has taken to social media to share the news and on Instagram Robson shared a snap with local singer Joe McElderry, saying he ‘had a wonderful few days filming the new series of Robson Green's Weekend Escapes’. ‘Joe is someone who reminds us of the power of music to uplift, inspire and unite people from all walks of life,’ Robson continues. ‘He’s an entertainer from the North East whose rise to stardom from the humble town [of] South Shields is nothing short of extraordinary.’ He also revealed viewers will see the two of them dragon board with Fenwick Ridley and stay in a bell tent at Tranwell Farm!

The news of Robson’s return to our screens comes with the announcement of a brand-new BBC series The Big Idea Works, featuring Dragons’ Den star Sara Davies, made by Gateshead based company TwentySix03. Sara is opening a ‘one-stop ideas workshop' in the North East to help aspiring inventors to transform their ideas into wonderful working prototypes.

The BBC’s latest comedy, Smoggie Queens, is also being filmed in the region. Written by and starring local actor Phil Dunning, it’s currently filming in Middlesbrough and stars Mark Benton, Alexandra Mardell, Patsy Lowe, and Elijah Young. Set in Teesside, the programme will showcase the region’s LGBTQ+ community, and received funding from the North East Production Fund (NEPF) – managed by North East Screen.

The BBC continues to work closely with its North East partners to boost what they’re calling ‘homegrown storytelling’ from the region – providing key funding for production, employment, and the development of the area’s media industry. This includes funding for North East Screen. To date the BBC partnership has contributed £18.6m gross value added (GVA) in the region and created more than 290 full time jobs.

Celebrating three years since the BBC’s historic commitment to the North East, Director-General Tim Davie met with local leaders at Darlington Hippodrome (on 1st August) to discuss the region’s future. ‘Our North East has been the backdrop for iconic TV shows and films, and talent and creativity runs through our DNA as a region,’ says North East Mayor, Kim McGuinness. ‘Work by the BBC and North East Screen has helped kickstart a renaissance in local production, job creation and investment in the North East's screen industry. However, this is just the start.

‘As Mayor I want to go further – so our region and talent is seen on screens across the globe. Just this week, I approved £25 million investment to begin work on the Crown Works Studios, which will create world-class film and TV production facilities in Sunderland. This will help make our area the home of real opportunity, ending the days where people have to leave the North East to pursue a career in creative industries.’

Robson Green’s Weekend Escapes is a co-production made by Signpost and Rivers Meet productions, both based in the North East. The air date of series three is yet to be announced but previous episodes are available on BBC iPlayer.
