All your football, basketball, horse racing and rugby union fixtures for December

In a one-off year we have more mayhem in the sporting calendar than I can remember in a lifetime that goes back many years, and for once no one can blame the Government. FIFA are the main culprits on this occasion, with the winter World Cup being held in Qatar. Oh well, mustn’t grumble, let’s look forward to it and – who knows – maybe an unlikely win for England… Well, that would cheer us up and boy do we deserve it. Other culprits with a plot not dissimilar to a fine Vera can be found lurking in the world of Premiership Rugby – I have my suspicions who is at fault but I had perhaps best be cautious for now in my accusations. Either way, with both Worcester and Wasps having gone into administration the season is in pieces, but the games still count and there’s much to play for. In New Zealand our women are seeking further sporting glory at the Rugby World Cup and at the time of writing they’re going pretty well. In the world of Cricket we have the ICC Men’s T Twenty World Cup, where once again England have a decent team fighting it out in Australia. Closer to home, the Rugby League World Cup is coming to its conclusion with England also playing well in all three tournaments. And meanwhile Newcastle have reached fourth in the Premier League…
FOOTBALL

While England seek to avoid a leek-skin slip up against our Welsh friends, the desert will be alive with the passion of ‘the most beautiful game’ this World Cup. At home Newcastle have moved up a gear, replacing a run of draws with wins, and as a result have cemented their position in the Premiership’s top four. If they manage to hold on for a Champions League play-off spot it will be a remarkable effort. Mr Shearer thinks it’s unlikely, despite his allegiance to the Club, but who knows and it’s given the Toon something to sing about. Meanwhile on Wearside The Black Cats are continuing in decent form. It seems the team has much to offer and once again Sunderland supporters are in good spirits. That’s where the good news ends with both ‘Boro and The Pools under real pressure. Managerial changes are afoot at Middlesbrough and all being well, an exciting appointment in Michael Carrick will see improvement across the Club. Hartlepool also need changes as they sit at the foot of the division.

RUGBY UNION
Rugby players NEWCASTLE FALCONS

There have been calls on various international players to line up for their country in the Autumn Internationals. Coupled with the sad demise of two clubs the fixture list is changing its face somewhat. These are a few fixtures to get to and enjoy an excellent atmosphere – and watch a spirited group of players too. Their recent win against Bristol was one of the best displays fans have seen for some time and hopefully there’s more to come.
