Are riding clothes the new athleisure? Durham-based Aztec Diamond Equestrian talk us through the trend

We’ve all heard the ‘horsey girl’ stereotypes – from snobbish to styleless, or just plain strange, there’s always been a flurry of false images painted around equestrianism and those who love it. But, with unpredictable times come unpredictable trends – which leads us to question, are riding clothes the new athleisure?

Horse riding search terms are at an all time high, we have a feeling that the huge Netflix hit ‘Bridgeton’ (or should we say Regé-Jean Page) has a lot to do with the growing interest in equestrian sport, and the fashion that surrounds it. Now we aren’t giving Bridgerton, or the fantasy of riding off into a Regency-era sunset, all of the credit, although we admit the idea is more than tempting. Equestrianism, beyond being a trending topic, is a passion for aristocracy and A-listers alike. Our very own Queen Elizabeth II still rides at the ripe old rage of 94, and is renowned for her passion for the sport and horse breeding – a love passed down through generations of royalty, with her daughter Princess Anne, and granddaughter Zara Tindall, both having represented Great Britain at the Olympics.

The royal family undoubtedly hold style stakes in their own right, opting for traditional takes on riding outfits and attitudes. But much like everything else in the modern world, it’s trend setters, like supermodel sisters Gigi and Bella Hadid, that up the ante and redefine how we view equestrianism and what the ‘new look’ is. Often sharing awe-inspiring pictures of their luxurious Pennsylvania ranch, or throwbacks of growing up to their huge social media followings, as well as discussing Olympic opportunities, which all plays a role in diminishing those age-old stereotypes.

The popularity doesn’t stop there, other famous horse lovers range from Kendall Jenner to Richard Hammond, Jennifer Gates, Eve Jobs, Jessica Springsteen and beyond. Equestrianism often ripples through high fashion houses too, with recent campaigns from Dior and Burberry placing prominence on the influence and magnificence of our four-legged loves.

Durham-based Aztec Diamond Equestrian is a brand that recognised the need for modernity in equestrian fashion before the trend wave hit. Founded by Jordan McCabe (Forbes 30 under 30), back in 2014 after spotting a niche in the market, the brand has grown from a small local business to trading worldwide and holding their place as one of the leaders in the equestrian market – constantly evolving but maintaining their roots, still being based in and trading from the North East.

Aztec Diamond design for the contemporary rider – someone whose life is rooted in, but not limited to, equestrianism. Combining high-performance technical fabrics with the idea of what a modern woman wants, you can find something in their collection that looks and feel luxurious, fits well and is versatile enough to take you from riding to skiing or even just running errands – without breaking the bank. Aztec Diamond Equestrian now has a range of over 100 pieces – from base layers to luxe loungewear and even a children’s range – that help blur the line between what you wear at the stables, and what you wear to the shops.
