Ways to Unwind this Weekend
Whether shopping is your go-to way to relax, you feel at peace counting the stars in the sky or you like to get your energy out screaming at a rugby game, there are so many ways to unwind this weekend
Take a trip to the races…
The Fighting Fifth is one of the most prestigious hurdle races in the horse-racing calendar, and this Saturday it's on the card at Newcastle Racecourse. Previous winners include recent champion hurdlers Epatante and Buveur d’Air, as well as legendary names from horse-racing’s past such as Night Nurse and Sea Pigeon. Book your tickets here to see history-in-the-making. Living North is sponsoring a race at this prestigious meeting as part of our close relationship with Newcastle Racecourse; the 1.30: The LIVING NORTH NOVICES HANDICAP STEEPLE CHASE. To celebrate, we’re giving away 10 pairs of Premier Enclosure tickets so you can come along too. Simply enter here to be in with a chance of winning a great day out.
Stay in, sit down and watch Sam Fender
Brit award winner and local lad Sam Fender is celebrating a musical hero from another era – the late, great, Alan Hull of Lindisfarne – in a one-off BBC Four documentary this Friday. With fascinating interviews, performances and unseen footage, Sam meets Alan’s friends, family and bandmates. This documentary is sure to inspire the next generation of Geordie musicians and it’s at the top of our weekend watchlist.
Support from the sidelines…
Tomorrow evening, Newcastle Falcons take on Worcester Warriors in the latest instalment of the Gallagher Premiership Rugby competition. Playing on their home pitch at Kingston Park, make sure to wrap up warm and cheer the team on as it’s set to be a close match. Kick off is 7.45pm so grab your tickets here to make sure you don’t miss out. If basketball is more your sport, watch the Teesside Lions go up against Sheffield Elite this Sunday. Playing at Eston Sports Academy, Middlesbrough there will be music, snacks and entertainment too. Buy your tickets here.
Wine and dine…
Get your glad rags on, we’re going for dinner! This evening Three’s A Crowd’s Head Chef Joe Carrol has joined forces with Drum and Monkey’s Paul Warner to bring together an evening of the best that Harrogate has to offer. The collaboration involves a set menu of dishes such as smoked cod’s roe pillow, keta caviar and chive, as well as 45-day aged Hereford Sirloin with leek and white truffle jus. As two of Yorkshire’s finest restaurants come together, this will be a night to remember. Book your place here.
Seeing stars
This weekend experience something out of this world at Grassholme Observatory. On Saturday evening take part in the dark sky astronomy event in which experienced astronomer and founder of the Kielder Observatory, Gary Fildes, will take you on a whistle-stop tour of the universe. You will be able to look at the Milky Way high overhead, as well as Saturn, Mars and Jupiter. If this ignites your passion for space, then you’ll be interested in our recent catch up with Dr Simon Morden to find out: Is there life on Mars? Read all about it here.
Be artful
Get your cultural fix this weekend with art. You can visit the Women Only Works on Paper exhibition at Laing Art Gallery, which celebrates some amazing female artists. Read our interview with acclaimed artist Lucie Clark to find out about the impact art has had on her, and you may even be inspired to start creating your own pieces too. This weekend also sees the popular Ouseburn Open Studios return, support local at this much-loved event and meet many of the designers and makers in their studios, find out more here.
Cook up a treat…
It's National Cake Day tomorrow and National French Toast Day on Sunday. Hooray! What better way to spend this wintry weekend than in the kitchen. Whether you prefer chai French toast or the banana bread variety, you’re a sucker for chocolate and hazelnut cake or lemon and passionfruit drizzle, or like us
Enjoy a little retail therapy…
Although Thanksgiving isn’t really celebrated in the UK (for those who don’t know, it’s today), the celebrations surrounding it have most definitely been adopted this side of the pond, and that includes Black Friday tomorrow, and Small Business Saturday the day after. Why not try to bag a discount on the perfect winter coat and make a saving on your beauty advent calendar, or shop small for Christmas, whether it’s jewellery by PI London or Lego from Steve Mayes, locally made candles or treats from your neighbourhood bakery, supporting local is always best.
