What Not to Miss This Weekend
August is finally here and with it comes plenty of sunshine this weekend
Hurray for Yorkshire Day…
The first day of August is Yorkshire Day and this year the official host is York, where there’s plenty planned to mark the occasion. On Parliament Street take time to explore the Four Days of Yorkshire Artisan Market from Thursday to Sunday (1st–4th) showcasing some of the best local makers around. There will also be a vintage carousel in St. Sampson’s Square, and a Trailblazers sculpture trail through the city highlighting impressive figures in York’s history (including WH Auden, Michael Rowntree and the eccentric Anne Lister). At York Mansion House on Thursday evening Horrible Histories author Terry Deary tells the tale of some of the UK’s most formidable enemies, and at York’s Merchant Taylor’s Hall visitors will be taken through its fascinating medieval history, exploring the lives of those who walked its corridors.
New beginnings…
Sunderland’s newest and most anticipated food destination is finally here. Sheepfolds Stables is opening its doors this Friday (2nd) at 6pm with a great launch weekend planned. As well as food from vendors like Deep North and I Scream For Pizza (and drinks from Mother Mercy and The Spey Snug), you can expect live bands, DJs and performers on the outdoor stage. One not to miss.
Stay loose…
The North East’s biggest music festival is returning for a two day event of great local tunes. Hosted by Loosefest, Saturday (3rd) will see the brand new Trick-Fest featuring some of the biggest names in dance music (including Patrick Topping). On Sunday expect a celebration of throwback music from the ‘90s and ‘00s. Elsewhere, in Cawthorne (South Yorkshire) this weekend, music and arts festival Under The Stars is returning for its 10th year. Running from Friday to Sunday (2nd–4th), expect a whole host of indie musicians, crafts and more.
In it to win it…
For something unique to do with the whole family, head to the Monopoly Takeover in Leeds. The first of its kind, this is a city-wide version of the classic board game. Explore key locations and landmarks of the city with life-sized tokens, clues and puzzles around every corner. Download your map online (or collect in person from a range of locations in the city), earn stamps from cast members and calculate the cost of buying the city back from Mr Monopoly himself.
Fun with the family…
Bishop Auckland is a hub of artistic activity this weekend with plenty to do for the whole family. From Thursday to Saturday (1st–3rd) Auckland Tower is running free art sessions where you can create stunning crepe paper flowers inspired by the Walled Garden. On Friday (2nd) at Auckland Castle, let the little ones run wild and discover more about nature as part of the Castle’s Little Acorns sessions. In the Castle Gardens, get stuck into the open archaeology sessions where you can see the ruined remains of the home of the man who blew up Auckland Castle’s medieval chapel – there’s no need to book, just show up!
Barbecue bonanza…
This weekend is expected to be a scorcher and what better way to enjoy the sun than with a barbecue in the back garden? Sharing plates and sides always go over well, and if you’re in need of inspiration the head to livingnorth.com to try these three delicious barbecue recipes – guaranteed to keep everyone happy. For something sweet, these cherry and coconut yogurt ice pops are sure to go down a treat.
