Why Alnwick Castle is The Hottest Ticket in Town This Autumn
After a busy summer at Alnwick Castle, we look forward to their upcoming autumn schedule
They’ve also had many wonderful and talented performers joining them throughout the summer to bring laughter, music and learning to their visitors. Their favourite jester Tom Fool and the Silly History Boys delighted audiences with their antics, and medieval melodies filled the castle walls courtesy of the Trouvère Medieval Minstrels, Pearl in the Egg and The Tudor Songbook. Raphael Historic Falconry also joined in for several performances of their spectacular bird shows, educating everyone on the importance of falconry in the medieval and Tudor periods.
Their Book Talks this season have seen several authors discussing their latest work. Ian Mortimer joined them for two events and taught everyone some essential facts about the Middle Ages, discussing two of his best-selling books. Earlier in the season they were joined by The Duke of Northumberland, Alison Weir and Annie Garthwaite to talk about their latest books, covering history from The Wars of the Roses to the Tudor Age.
They’re still looking forward to welcoming Dan Jones and Nicola Tallis for their final two Book Talks. Dan will be joining them on 18th September as part of the book tour for his biography ‘Henry V’, exploring the life of the elusive medieval monarch and the legacy he left in his wake. Nicola’s new biography, ‘Young Elizabeth’ will be the focus of her event on 11th October and is the most comprehensive account of the young queen’s life, using sources written by her own hand. Both events promise to be fascinating and informative for history buffs and novices alike!
The autumn season still has plenty to offer, with tours on offer to explore both the historical and film and TV heritage of the castle, as well as talks on medieval life and crafts (plus some hands-on opportunities to join in) with their artisans. Explore the three on-site museums, which contain artefacts from as far back as the Roman period, and celebrate the history of the Northumberland Fusiliers. The lavish State Rooms are also ready to welcome and amaze you with their beautiful decorations, and paintings by masters such as Van Dyck and Canaletto. Any visit isn’t complete without a walk along the Gun Terrace to enjoy the beautiful views across the Pastures, designed by Capability Brown.
Alnwick Castle is open daily until the 24th October, and they can’t wait to welcome you! You can book online to save 10 percent on your ticket, which is also valid for a year from the day of purchase.
