Why the Whole Family Will Love Shrek The Musical in Sunderland
Once upon a time (well, this February actually), Sunderland Empire audiences were invited to go on a journey Far Far Away when a brand-new production of Shrek the Musical took to the stage
Shrek and his trusty sidekick Donkey set out on a quest to defeat a dragon and rescue Princess Fiona (played by Strictly favourite Joanne Clifton). It’s the heart-warming story we know and love (thanks to the Oscar-winning DreamWorks animated film), and it’s been transformed into a fun-packed family show with hilarious characters and toe-tapping tunes that kids and big kids will be keen to tell their friends about.

Audiences are transported to a world home to ogres, talking donkeys and a hint of magic, and the cast armed with their comedic and musical talent mean this show is a joy to watch from start to finish. Theatre legend Antony Lawrence puts his own stamp on Shrek with a powerful voice and heaps of personality, and with Joanne as Princess Fiona they really are the perfect pair.

But it was their third-wheel yet equally fabulous Brandon Lee Sears as the delightful and acrobatic Donkey which had our little one in fits of giggles! He was keen to sing along too and that’s not surprising as this new show is packed with all the iconic songs from David Lindsay-Abaire and Jeanine Tesori’s original musical – think Im A Believer, Big Bright Beautiful World and I Know It's Today.
With unique choreography, imaginative projections, fantastic costumes and larger-than-life characters, Shrek The Musical is a fairytale show the whole family will love, so don’t miss your part in this unforgettable journey with Shrek and his friends!
