The Yorkshire Food News You Need to Know This Month
Here's everything you need to know in Yorkshire
HIDDEN GEMS
Some of the UK’s top chefs have recently picked their favourite regional spots that deliver on quality without breaking the bank. Naming a good range of friendly pubs and cafés, in Yorkshire Shaun Rankin from Grantley Hall and Michael Wignall from The Angel at Hetton listed The Blue Lion at East Witton, Oliver’s Pantry in Ripon and Ye Old Naked Man Café in Settle among their top picks.
A NEW CHAPTER
Samuel’s Restaurant, Swinton Park’s elegant fine-dining space has recently appointed a new head chef to lead its recently-refurbished kitchen. The restaurant is in safe hands as Struan Macintyre is no stranger to the culinary scene in Yorkshire, with previous experience in establishments like Aldwark Manor, Grantley Hall, and The Principal in York.
BEST OF THE BEST
The Good Food Guide has announced its list of Best Local Restaurants for 2024 and Yorkshire has done itself proud as always. Whilst Horsforth-based bistro Bavette nabbed the overall top spot, The Empire Café in Leeds received a well-earned shout out. Opening in early 2023, here you can expect delicious seasonal dishes in generous portions and at a reasonable price – think venison tartare with capers and pickles, a negroni-inspired tiramisu, and burrata with walnuts, honey and grapes.
An Apple a Day
As autumn arrives, so do the apples. These locally-made goodies showcase them at their best. Find them at stockists Yorkshirewide
Rosey Apples, £2.95 The Great Yorkshire Shop thegreatyorkshireshop.co.uk
Apple and Ginger Juice, £3.95 Yorkshire Wolds Apple Juice Co yorkshirewoldsapplejuice.co.uk

Soup for the Soul
When autumn arrives a warm bowl of something delicious always hits the spot
Thai Red Curry Chicken Noodle Soup
A twist on an old favourite, this soup really packs a punch. Don’t worry though – if you’re not a fan of heat this recipe can be adapted easily, and the coconut milk helps to lower the temperature without compromising on taste. This is best garnished with plenty of lime and fresh coriander.
Squash, Lime and Chilli Soup
It might still be too early for pumpkins, but squash is the next best thing and adds a wonderful creaminess to this soup. Inspired by Mexican tortilla soup, this is another recipe with a kick and is the perfect option for a quick midweek meal.
French Onion Soup
It’s a classic for a reason – this soup is so simple to make but has a big pay-off. Don’t be shy when it comes to the seasoning (or butter). The cheesy pastry lid for this soup is certainly a labour of love but is well worth the effort.
TASTE THE DIFFERENCE
Those who saw her on the Great British Menu will be delighted to hear that Nina Matsunaga, head chef at the double AA Rosette–Awarded Black Bull Inn in Sedbergh, is launching her first-ever tasting menu. Nina will draw from her Japanese and German heritage to enhance the offering of seasonal, locally-sourced dishes which are sure to wow guests.
