The Yorkshire Food News You Need to Know For September
Here's what you need to know in the world of food this month
Come and Spaghet It
Looking for inspiration for a midweek pasta night? Since launching in 2020, the award-winning Malton-based Yorkshire Pasta Company has won praise from celebrity chefs including James Martin, Marco Pierre White and Tommy Banks for their authentic, artisan pasta made using traditional methods. Slow-dried and finished by hand, this is not your standard supermarket pasta. Shop the full range online, or visit one of the hundreds of independent shops that stock them Yorkshirewide.
A Whole New Look
Contemporary Chinese restaurant Tattu in Leeds has recently reopened after a complete interior makeover. The new space draws on the architecture of traditional Chinese buildings, with rich hues of gold, blue, and red, as well as elegant marble patterns. The menu has also had an upgrade, and features new dishes like char siu pork done two ways with pear and crackling, and crispy king prawns with mango and sweet chilli.
Bondgate Bakery
From the ingredients they use to the recipes they draw from, this award-winning bakery in Otley takes its bread seriously. Enjoy everything from classic white bloomers, granary loaves and sourdough bakes to fruity muesli bread, seeded rye loaves and focaccia. For something sweeter, you can choose from a great array of traybakes, cakes and brownies.
Flori Bakery
A gem in York, this bakery may be small but inside you’ll find a friendly team of bakers hand-making delicious pastries with traditional, and quirky flavours – think fig, honey and custard or mushroom, pesto and whipped ricotta-filled croissants, or (our favourite) maple-glazed bacon in flaky pastry.
Two Dales Bakery
In Reeth you’ll find award-winning breads, pastries and pizzas made in the on-site bakehouse at Two Dales Bakery with organic flour from Shipton Mill, alongside free-range Wensleydale eggs and high-quality British butter. Practicing traditional fermentation methods allows plenty of time for the dough to develop fabulous flavours, before being baked in the stone-based bread oven.
Strike A Chord
Fans of Fish & Forest in York will be thrilled to hear that the team’s latest venture, Notes Wine Bar, has officially opened in the former Fish & Forest site (which has in turn relocated to Grape Lane in the city centre). This relaxed wine bar is the perfect place to stop in after work or before dinner. As well as wine, the bar offers an impressive range of cocktails, draught beers and small plates of open sandwiches, olives and cured fish dishes.
New Digs
With three AA Rosettes under its belt (and a coveted spot in the Michelin Guide), Sheffield’s Jöro is stepping it’s game up once again, moving location to a brand new spot just outside the city in the Oughtibridge Paper Mill. The renovated 19th century mill will allow the team to have two bars, an all-day dining terrace, outdoor kitchen, bedrooms and an on-site deli shop. There are only a few weeks left before they make their move, so be sure to keep you eyes peeled.
