All the Yorkshire basketball, football, horse racing and ice hockey fixtures you'll need this month

The football season kicks on with the FIFA World Cup a distant desert mirage. The FA Cup looks to have been kind to our remaining Yorkshire clubs with late January fixtures away against Wrexham (Sheffield United) and at home against Fleetwood Town for Sheffield Wednesday, while as we write Leeds United are still progressing. Meanwhile the indoor pursuits of basketball and ice hockey in Sheffield allow for thrills and spills galore as their respective seasons take shape; while the Sharks are struggling, the Steelers are having another fine year. For lovers of jump racing the season also goes up a gear as the big festivals draw ever closer.

The recent freezing weather has led to an abundance of cancelled fixtures across the UK so trainers will be looking to get a run into some of their fancied horses for the upcoming festivals at Cheltenham and Aintree. Owners and trainers with less lofty ambitions will also be seeking a winner or two as hopefully the ground eases.

Home and away in quick succession to huge rivals Manchester United may be season defining for both, or either, team, as Leeds face a mix of opponents from the top to the bottom of the Premiership. Huddersfield and Rotherham still have plenty of work to do while Sheffield United need to stay focused to secure a treasured Premiership return.
