This year marks the 20th anniversary of the UK publication of Labyrinth, and to celebrate international bestselling author Kate Mosse is heading out on a 34-date theatre tour
We’ve got a pair of tickets to Labyrinth Live: Unlocking the Secrets of the Labyrinth at Darlington Hippodrome on 4th March and a pair for the Northern Stage, Newcastle show on 10th April to offer to two lucky Living North readers, plus a copy of the new hardcover special edition of Labyrinth each.
For the first time, Kate Mosse will bring the story behind Labyrinth to the stage in an unforgettable one-woman show, Labyrinth Live: Unlocking the Secrets of the Labyrinth. First published by Orion in 2005 and translated into more than 30 languages, Labyrinth quickly became an award-winning international phenomenon. Harry Potter star Tom Felton joined an all-star cast for the Scott Free TV adaptation. In celebration of the 20th anniversary, Phoenix will publish a new hardcover special edition of the book in February 2025 with a specially commissioned introduction by Sir Ian Rankin and a new afterword by Kate herself.
Kate says the original release changed her life. ‘It meant it was possible for me to be a full-time writer,’ she says. ‘Nobody becomes a novelist thinking: “this is how I’ll make a living”. I was already in my 40s and had published four books before, but I was lucky. Labyrinth became a global super-seller and has now sold something in the region of eight million copies in 37 different languages. So, I want to say “thank you” to all the readers that made this happen and celebrate the anniversary with them.’
Kate is looking forward to heading out on tour. ‘I’ll be sharing my inspirations behind the story of the writing of Labyrinth, from the very first moment I set foot in Carcassonne in winter 1989 to the inspirational moments of climbing the mountain of Montségur in the Pyrenees six or seven years later and coming face to face with the image of the woman who would become my lead character, Alaïs, though not knowing who she was,’ she says. ‘I'll be talking about how the novel took shape, how my characters came to life, about the beautiful landscape of Languedoc – we’ll show a few of the pictures from the filming of the Labyrinth mini-series in France and South Africa.’
Kate will also shine a spotlight on the real history that underpins the novel: the Nazi Grail hunters and Grail legends; the history of the Christian sect called the Cathars, and about labyrinths themselves, which became significant in Christianity in medieval Europe.
‘I hope [the audience] will have been moved, have laughed, have celebrated, have maybe cried, that audiences will have experienced all the emotions,’ Kate says. ‘I write to entertain, and I perform to entertain, so enjoyment is top of the list. Beyond that, I’d like them to have a strong sense of how women’s stories are part of history, too, and how that matters.’
